While it’s impossible to avoid airborne allergens entirely, (even moving to the desert won’t necessarily help because you may develop new allergies to local plants) there are numerous things you can do to reduce their devastating effect on your life.

The first thing I tell my patients is to stop smoking, since smoking is a known allergy trigger. Then, implement as many of the following recommendations as you can.

Pollen. Check the pollen counts in the newspaper. Generally, pollen counts are worse in the early morning and on windy days. Take these steps to minimize exposure:

Have someone else do your yard work while you stay inside with the windows closed and the air conditioning running on high pollen days.

If you do have to work outside, wear a face mask designed to filter pollen and keep it from reaching your nasal passages.

Leave all gardening tools, including clothing, outdoors, and shower immediately after working outdoors.

Plant low-allergenic grasses, trees and shrubs. Generally, flowering plants that rely on insect pollination are best, since their pollen are too large and heavy to become airborne. For a complete list, visit the American Academy of Allergies, Asthma & Immunology Web site: http://www.aaaai.org.

Dust Mites. The best way to reduce exposure to dust mites (microscopic arthropods that reside indoors) is to reduce the dust in your home:

Consider replacing any wall-to-wall carpeting with wood, laminate, vinyl or tile floors, and covering upholstered furniture with vinyl covers, or buying leather furniture.

Use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter, which filters tiny particles.

Dust mites are most prevalent in the bedroom, so attack that room first. Remove blinds (substitute shades, instead), down-filled blankets and feather pillows. Encase your bedding in zippered, plastic, airtight and dust-proof covers, and wash all sheets and bedding weekly in the hottest water available.

Molds. If you’re allergic to molds, avoid areas that harbor them including:

Moist, shady areas outdoors, garden compost piles, greenhouses, mills and grain fields or bins.

Damp basements and closets, bathrooms, places where fresh food is stored, air conditioners, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture and old foam rubber pillows.

Open a window or use a fan after a steamy shower or bath to allow the humidity to escape.

Animals. All pets can cause allergies, even Chihuahuas and so-called “hairless” cats. As many allergy experts say, “The best pet for someone with allergies is a goldfish.” But, if you simply can’t bear to find another home for your pet, you can:

Have someone else bathe your pet weekly and brush it outdoors several times a week.

Use a room air cleaner.

Wear a face mask while house cleaning.

Have someone else clean the litter box and make sure it’s placed away from air filtrating intake vents in your home if you have forced air heating and/or central air conditioning.

Wash your hands after touching or handling a pet to avoid spreading the dander.

Keep pets out of your bedroom, since that’s where you spend the most time.

Questions to Ask Your Health Care Professional about Allergies

1. Could an underlying medical condition cause my allergic symptoms?

2. Do I have any medical conditions that might limit my use of over-the-counter medications?

3. What are the side effects of the medications or treatments you’re recommending? Will they interact with any other medications I’m taking?

4. How will you monitor my treatment? How long will it take to work?

5. Is my condition potentially dangerous? When should I seek professional medical care after an allergic reaction?

6. Where are some of the unexpected places I might encounter the substance I’m allergic to?

7. Should I be tested for allergy shots?

Recently returned a latest research suggests a relationship between lack of sleep and the risk of diabetes. In their research, scientists from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found, inconsistent sleep schedule or sleep deprivation can increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

In this research the researchers monitored 21 healthy people, who all live in a sleep laboratory for nearly six weeks, in which the cycles of sleep, diet and activity are all controlled by the researcher.

The results of these studies have shown, participants are only allowed to sleep for about six hours a night and experienced a shift in the cycle sleep / wake has a blood sugar level is higher and tends to slow down the metabolic process. The researchers said that higher glucose levels for long periods of time on some of the participants could be increased to prediabetes.

Dr. Vivian Fonseca, chief of endocrinology at Tulane University School of Medicine, who was not involved in this study, said that there are many things that play an active link between lack of sleep and obesity. He also said that recent studies have shown that levels of this hormone in the body of a person likely to be altered by sleep deprivation. This could help explain why those who sleep less are very prone to obesity.

Sleep deprivation and Diabetes

In the study, researchers conducted blood tests to measure levels of several hormones, including insulin, cortisol (stress related), and leptin and ghrelin (which relate to regulate appetite).

They found that disrupted sleep schedules because a decrease in 32 percent of the amount of insulin released in the body after eating. Insulin is a key hormone in the regulation of blood sugar. Lisa Rafalson, a professor of pediatrics and family medicine at the University at Buffalo says that the decrease in insulin levels is one explanation of how the disruption or lack of sleep can cause diabetes. Lisa Rafalson also said that the increased levels of stress hormones that kept awake the body can cause hormonal imbalance. Insulin thus cannot perform their duties efficiently, so you end up getting the remaining excess glucose in the bloodstream.

While the latest study, the researchers did not notice any changes in hormone levels gheriln (which increases appetite) on the sleep-deprived participants. Whereas some previous studies showed that sleep deprivation can lead to higher levels of the hormone ghrelin and leptin are lower.

Related to these findings, Dr Vivian Fonseca says that researchers need to find out if there is a solution to prevent the increased risk of diabetes in addition to sleep more. The fact is many people who sleep less because of their work. So it is necessary to identify whether there is anything else they can do to fix it.

It may be that ovarian cancer is stalking you.

Recent research from experts says, that the relationship between posture and body shape with the risk of cancer. Observational study of scientists from Oxford University in England showed that women with high body posture plus obese tend to have a greater risk of ovarian cancer.

In this research, an international study group examined data from 47 studies conducted in 14 countries in which involved more than 25,000 women with ovarian cancer and 81 000 women without the disease.

Researchers noted any increase in 2-inches tall women is associated with significant increase chances of developing ovarian cancer. In addition, body mass index values are higher (measured by height and weight) were also associated with higher risk of ovarian cancer (ovarian), but only among women who had never taken menopausal hormone therapy.

The review found that the relationship between height and weight and ovarian cancer remain, even after accounting for other factors that may influence the risk of ovarian cancer, such as age, age at menarche, family history of ovarian or breast cancer, oral contraceptive use, status menopause, and use of alcohol or tobacco.

Researchers revealed that women who had their height and weight, especially in high-income countries, is constantly increasing in recent decades. The findings are published in this week’s issue of the journal PLoS Medicine.

Although the researchers found a relationship between height and weight and the risk of ovarian cancer, this does not prove that a higher or more severe can cause ovarian cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a very aggressive, often misunderstood type of cancer. The five-year survival rate is between 25 and 50 percent. The reason for the poor prognosis is that IBC usually grows rapidly and often spreads quickly to other parts of the body. Researchers have developed a new cell and animal model that holds promise for providing a detailed understanding the disease and for developing effective interventions.

Contraceptives are believed to control the high pregnancy rates. Unfortunately, it was a cause of contraception problems for users, the majority of women, such as nausea, dizziness, and so forth.

If you want to know more, there are five of the most common symptoms experienced by women due to side effects from the use of contraception

Headache, dizziness and pain in breast

gynecologist Hilda Hutcherson said that the side effects of contraception use is often felt after some time you take birth control pills and it goes away on its own. . If you feel dizzy, headache and breast pain is still felt, then immediately stop taking birth control and switch to another brand of birth control pills

Nausea

Nausea may be lost within a few months. To overcome the nausea, try to eat certain foods shortly after taking birth control pills. If you use other contraception, such as vaginal ring or patch, then try other contraception alternatives.

Bleeding
Dr. Hutcherson also said that most of these side effects contraception make women become more stressful than any drugs other side effects. The emergence of bleeding usually occurs in women who choose to use contraception in the form of injectable contraceptives, pills or spiral.

Decrease in sex drive

Try changing your contraception if you experience these side effects. Dr. Huctherson also said that for some women, birth control pills you can replace it with a more androgenic (testosterone-like), libido usually returns to normal. If it still does not work, see a doctor to replace appropriate contraceptives.

Mood mess

Dr. Hutcherson added that in her experience, women often depressed because taking of birth control pills, but substitute a new type of contraception that it will not matter. She also says that all hormonal contraceptives have side effects that are similar. So, maybe you can try non-hormonal contraception.
